Blair Cemetery [A Grayson County Cemetery]

Blair Cemetery Information & Photographs from Richard Rand "Dick" Lindsly.

There are absolutely no stones left. The only identifying object is an old iron gate or piece of fence that was probably part of the cemetery. There are a few pieces of bricks and pottery shards in the vicinity around the tree. It was a difficult task to find the cemetery. I took a GPS locator with me the last time and the GPS coordinates are +33° 38' 39.90", -96° 24' 48.70"

Blair Cemetery

John Francis Blair was a large land and slave owner in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. So on November 15, 1859, the journey was begun in wagons. Uncle George said,

"We left Virginia in wagons, and they were covered all right, but were drawn by mules and horses instead of oxen, and to that extent our coming may have been irregular. We came over a good road as far as Knoxville, Tennessee, where we boarded a steamboat for Gaines' Landing, Arkansas. Disembarking at Gaines' Landing, we again took the road, or rather resumed our wagons, for there were no roads, and headed for Texas. We arrived in Grayson County, January 15, 1860. We were seventy days making the journey -- one of our airplane boys could cover the distance in the course of an afternoon. From Gaines' Landing we drove across Arkansas and crossed Red River at Texarkana."

With John F. came his 8 sons and 2 daughters--there were 33 or 34 in the family then, including sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and children, among them 4 babies, Tom, son of Keen and Lucy Blair, Peter, son of Charles and Pat Blair, Nanny, daughter of Peter and Emaline Turner, and Will Henry, son of Eliza Ann and W. D. (Billy) Williams. There were also ten Negroes, 8 of John F. Blair's and 2 of Peter Turner's, son-in-law of John F. Blair.

With no remaining stones to record this record is, of necessity, comprised of information gleaned from several older plot records. According to one of these records, Suse, a slave of J.F. Blair is buried here, as is the 'slave of a neighbor' and a stranger found dead in a house nearby.
