Caplinger Cemetery [A Hunt County Cemetery]

Although Caplinger Cemetery is reported to be located in Fannin County, the map at left shows it just barely across the line into Hunt county. It is on a dirt road off of Highway 69 between Celeste and Leonard. It’s in the corner of a pasture on private property. There are only two stones in this tiny cemetery.

Caplinger, Julia    21 Feb 1895        age 55; wife of William

Photo of tombstone of William Caplinger.William Caplinger son of Samuel Caplinger of Virgina was born in Tennessee in 1818.

William’s wife was Julia A. Ford who was born in Tennessee about 1825. She was actually 70 years old when she died, but her children were probably the ones who had the tombstones made, and she probably told them she was never older than 55. It’s interesting because in the 1870 Missouri Census she is 45 and William is 50. In the 1880 Texas census she is 53 and he is 60. Buy by 1895 she was only 55????

Photo of tombstone of Julia Caplinger. width=William and Julia apparently met in Missouri, and married 3 Sep 1866, in the county of Cedar.

By the 1870 Missouri Census they lived in the city of Linn, Stockton Post Office in Cedar county, Missouri, and had three children:

  • James M. Caplinger age 2
  • Sarah M. Caplinger age 1
  • Susan Caplinger age 1 month
  • Then in 1880 they were in the Texas Census in Hunt county, Precinct 4, District 66, and had four children:

(James and Susan may not have survived because they were not listed)

The 1870 and 1880 Census shows that all children were born in Missouri which indicates the family did not move to Texas until after 1878 when Sylvester was born.

Sylvester is the Fannin county connection for this family. By 1930 he had married and moved to Fannin county and is buried at Gober Cemetery where you will find additional information.
