Census Records

YOU may have FREE access to the Heritage Quest Databases...including the Census Images...and not realize it.

Texas residents can obtain free remote access to HeritageQuest Online through the TexShare Databases program. You will need to contact your local library to get the LOG IN and PASSWORD for the TexShare Databases. Some libraries have a link on their website and the login information is your library card number. Other libraries will give you the local LOG IN and PASSWORD and you will use them at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/texshare/pl/index.html

Not from Texas? You, too, may have access to the Heritage Quest Databases and not realize it. The Encyclopedia of Genealogy has a list of libraries in every state which have free access for YOU. Theoretically, this site is a Web 2.0 site which can be updated by users but we have been unable to successfully add updated information. So, if your area is not on these lists, call your local library and ask about Remote access to Heritage Quest. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Here's a REAL DEAL: For $20 a year, anyone can get a library card from the Mid-Continent Public Library in Independence, Missouri. With that card, you have remote, online access to Heritage Quest, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, Proquest's obituaries, and other useful databases. This is by far the cheapest way to have access to the Heritage Quest censuses (other than free, of course!) and well worth the $20. We hear the obituaries alone are worth the $20 even if you don't need the census images.

To register for an out-of-district card, there is a $20 fee and the card is valid for one year.

"Reference sources routinely dismiss the 1890 census records as 'destroyed by fire' in 1921. Examination of the records of the Bureau of Census and other federal agencies, however, reveals a far more complex tale. This is a genuine tragedy of records--played out before Congress fully established a National Archives--and eternally anguishing to researchers."

The only copy of the 1890 census pages was severely damaged by fire in 1921. The destruction of the census pages, however, happened in 1935 as a result of human error. Read here about the fate of the destroyed 1890 census.

Over the years, some pages have been found which escaped the order for destruction. These pages have been microfilmed. These microfilms are further described in the linked article above. As for Texas, some pages from Trinity County and Ellis County were saved. No pages of the 1890 census for Fannin county are known to exist.

Other than a few pages of the 1930 census, below, we have no transcribed census records on the site for the above years. This does NOT mean you are out of luck. We have a suggestion for you....

Subscribe to the Fannin County Mailing list OR post a Query to the Fannin county Message Boards. (The Board postings are monitored by mailing list subscribers so it is not necessary to do both.) In either place, ask for a census look up. We have the most amazing group of mailing list subscribers who jump all over a request for a census look up! Give it a try.
