Telephone Man Fatally Burned Late Saturday
Believed Gasoline Leaked From Car Ignited By Match
C. E. Stone, prominent citizen of the Telephone community was burned to death around 3:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon when trapped in his car as it ran off a bridge a short distance north of Telephone.
Mr. Stone was by himself at the time of the accident and apparently lost control of the machine in loose gravel or sand on the road and ran off the bridge into a shallow ravine, his leg being caught in the car.
Tom Owens and Dr. S. J. Williams arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after it happened and tried for some time to get the car out of the ravine or extricate Mr. Stone from the car, but were unable to do so.
Mr. Owens said that he and Dr. Williams went for help and left Mr. Stone in the car. On their return a short time later found the car in flames with Mr. Stone in the car. Efforts in rescue him were futile.
It was believed that gasoline had leaked from the tank onto the ground as the car was tilted over on its side ??? that Mr. Stone struck a match to light a cigar and threw the match onto the gasoline-soaked ground, causing it to explode and set fire to the car and Mr. Stone.
Mr. Stone is survived by his wife and two grandchildren; Marvin Stone, who is stationed at Honolulu, T. H. with the United States Army, and Miss Mary Frances Stone of Oklahoma City. Miss Stone arrived only Saturday morning for a visit with her grandparents.
Buck Cooper, Justice of Peace at Telephone returned a verdict of accidental death at an inquest held at Telephone.
County Attorney Louis Welch went to Honey Grove and later aided in an investigation.
Funeral services were announced for 3 p.m. Sunday at Forest Grove. Cooper Funeral Home of Honey Grove will be in charge.
